A study conducted by the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine is the first to examine the impact of sleep duration on the risk of death in patients with metabolic syndrome. People with a common cluster of symptoms that puts them at increased risk of heart disease and diabetes are two times as likely to die as people without those risk factors if they get less than six hours of sleep per night.
